….or maybe not!
Do you see behaviors and actions of people and just wonder “how crazy is that?” You might also use some other words to question what you have just experienced or seen.
This week, many of us have listened and watched the playing out of a simply horrendous event of the loss of lives as a result of a dispute/disagreement over a parking space. To say that we are “confused” over how could anything surrounding a parking spot cause the loss of life, is putting it mildly.
However, my lunchtime experience makes me reflect and wonder about the little regard people have for others and someone else’s property or life. (My disclaimer in all my writings is that these are very personal and my messages are intended for myself too.)
….a woman with 4 older elementary age children, in the pizza restaurant – for lunch, it is a “order at the counter” place – a slice of pizza, salad, drink and you are gone or can take your seat. The 4 kids take a seat at a high-top table and the woman gives them each a slice of pizza. She returns to the counter and gets her salad – which had a container with her dressing on it, with a lid. It falls to the floor and splatters to “here, there and yonder” – you know how things like that will hit places you can never imagine! And, what do you think she did……NOTHING!
Yep, that is right – she told the server that would need to get it up. No, she did not get a napkin, pick up the cup/lid – offer to help in any way – nothing! Really – I am confused! Where do “we” get off thinking that our messes are someone else’s to clean up? Better yet, when we make a mess, who should be responsible for cleaning it up?
So, being that I work in Chapel Hill, I am highly sensitized to what has transpired this week. And, to make matters even worse for me – I stopped at a local shopping establishment yesterday after work. I needed to make a phone call before I went into the store to make my purchase, as I am sitting in my vehicle – between the two white lines – appropriately spaced, another car pulls into the adjoining spot at a direction that had his front bumper angled at my car and so close I had to slither out of the car. But, before I did my “shimmy”, he gets out and gives me “a wave”. REALLY! Now, I can honestly answer, I was more than irritated, annoyed and truthfully – just confused and wondered what I had done to cause him such irritation…..
So, I am eating carrots and celery to help me be better prepared for the “shimmy” that I have to do when someone is parking too close for comfort. As ridiculous as these two stories are – I am confused as to why people have so little regard for the simplest aspects of life and take no responsibility for their messes…..
